This scenic design utilized large scale projection capabilities to transform a small black box theatre into a vast array of settings for unique and inquisitve short plays. PATTERNS OF DISTURBANCE was curated by Elizabeth Cortelyou and myself, with an emphasis on fragmented relationships that have been "disturbed." The production elements were heavily considered throughout the curation process, making it an essential aspect of the overall production.
There is powerful simplicity within an activation of space on a dominating scale. This achieved a seamless transition across time periods and subject matters of this individualized pieces. They had to be able to function as single entities, but also interact with other each through commentary and experience. The transformative capabilites of projection mapping made this pliable sort of story telling possible.
A variety of media was used to create the projections from digitial to analog techniques. Many archival imagery was also used in order to create authenticity with time and place. The research aspect of this project was thorough and exciting, as it opened new pathways regarding what visuals could be associated with the varying themes. While the projection technology itself is advanced, most of the strategies to create the imagery was impulsive and rudimentary, reflecting this urgency to tell stories through ephemerality.
